Ed Templeton

If you don’t have a background in skating, Ed Templeton is and was the grandaddy of Toy Machine, a skate company known for its fun aesthetic that never really overdid it like World Industries, Spitfire and Blind eventually did. The logo was a stylised robotic looking devil, which was just magnetic to a thirteen year old tomboy who hung around the town’s only skateshop making a nuisance of herself.

The best graphics were the gruesome John K style decaying monsters, which were the closest to Templeton’s own style. The above video has a few monster cameos, but is mostly a touching vignette into the voyeuristic nature of snapshot photography, how it’s affected his life, and how his life has affected his work and relationship with his wife Deanna.

I first found out about Ed’s work outside of skating last year, through his brilliant zine ‘Teenage Kissers’ — you can follow his blog/photoblog here, and Deanna’s blog, here.
